When it comes to a master’s degree, business students often share confusion while choosing between Executive MBA (2 Years, Weekend Classes) and regular MBA (2.5-Years).  After graduation, it is vitally important to choose a master’s degree that is relevant to the student’s interests.  Many students seek job opportunities with an intention to gain practical experience. Meanwhile, others opt to continue their further studies to accomplish 18 years of education. Unlike other fields, business studies give the students an edge to pursue an executive master’s degree commonly known across the globe as an Executive MBA (EMBA). So, how is the executive degree different from the regular one? Here, we have gathered all the information about the benefits of the executive MBA program while we highlight the common differences.

What is an Executive MBA?

Executive MBA or EMBA is a globally recognized master’s program designed for business students. What sets it apart from the regular MBA is the duration period and eligibility criteria. EMBA is suitable for those business graduates who are not willing to take a break from pursuing their careers. These students often start working as soon as they are done with their bachelor’s degree. After gaining a certain amount of professional experience, they become eligible to pursue an MBA degree with a slightly different course module. The duration of EMBA is 1.5 years which is almost a year lesser than the regular full-time MBA.

Before looking at major Executive MBA and MBA differences, it is important to understand that the choice of degree depends upon the goals of the students. If they are looking to continue their job and pursue a professional master’s degree at the same time, EMBA is a great option for them. This degree program covers the professional modules while skipping the introductory courses. EMBA is cheaper in comparison to the regular MBA degree.

What is a Regular MBA?

The regular degree of MBA is a full-time program that varies in duration from 2 to 3 years. The students looking to seek admissions without gaining professional experience can apply for MBA right away after graduation. The regular MBA degree covers both, introductory modules as well as professional modules. The students who opt for this full-time degree can start their professional careers after completion of the program.

The full-time MBA covers basic management in the initial year and specialization is covered in the next years. The full-time degree is costly as compared to the executive degree owing to a longer duration period.

Why is the Executive MBA better?

In the last few years, the global, as well as the local scenario, has observed a major shift. Professional organizations have encouraged students to apply for internships and jobs after their graduation. The wide-ranging career possibilities have enabled students to gain professional experience at an earlier stage. In this fast-paced environment, EMBA is a vital option for students owing to the following benefits:

  1. EMBA is cheaper as compared to a regular MBA.
  2. EMBA has a lesser duration and convenient schedules allowing students to continue their jobs at the same time.
  3. EMBA focuses on managerial and leadership development which greatly helps in a professional career.
  4. By pursuing this degree program, students can accomplish multiple goals in a limited period of time.
  5. Professional experience alongside EMBA greatly helps in studies.

Eligibility Criteria

Students seeking admissions in regular MBA need to have 16 years of education with a minimum grade requirement (as declared by relevant college or university). Some institutes also value having professional experience in the case of a regular MBA. However, it is not a requirement.

If we talk about the Executive MBA eligibility, students opting for the program need to have 16 years of education along with a professional experience of 2 years. The basic grade requirements may vary for different universities, however, a minimum of 45% (2nd division) is required in all the cases.

In Pakistan, there are many universities offering admissions in the executive degree program (along with full-time MBA). However, it is highly preferable to choose an institute that is envisioned to deliver professional business programs helping students to compete in a global environment. Students can check between the course modules offered by universities and evaluate their ratio of interest for each based on their preferences.

It is the time of admissions, and many students who have completed their 12-years education are looking for a suitable degree program. One of the most popular fields of interest among the students is business administration. In Pakistan, there is a broad network of colleges and universities (Government and Private Sector) offering a 2-year bachelor’s degree in business administration as well as several other disciplines. However, owing to the global advances in the education sector, it is of vital importance to analyze the value of a 2-year bachelor’s program in Pakistan compared to a 4 years degree.

For those who are confused if they should proceed with BBA or BBA (Hons), here are a few facts that you need to know before you decide.

The Scope of the BBA 2 Years Program

The global education environment has become highly competent in recent years. This means that the majority of the global institutes accept 4 years BBA degree (or any other bachelor’s degree) while applying for a Master’s program. If you, or any of your fellows, plan to go abroad for higher education, 2-years BBA may not get you through. There is a very limited scope of education and career options for 2 years of BBA. In Pakistan, we have observed a rather slow decline in this regard. However, with the revised framework of HEC (2019), the decision has been made to offer a 4-years bachelor’s degree.

Dr. Tariq Banuri – Chairman of HEC announced the implementation in the last year. He had explained how Pakistan is falling behind to compete with the global educational institutions. He also said that HEC had already asked universities to abolish the 2-years degree (BA/BSc and MA/MSc) programs. But it was not implemented. “Now is the time for implementation”, he said.

Why 4-years BBA Degree is Better than 2-years?

Business administration is one of the modern disciplines that evolved with digital advances. To encompass and integrate the latest course modules, a 2-year bachelor’s degree is not sufficient. Not only it requires more time, but it also demands familiarity with a few added modules. The honors (4 years) degree enables the students to do a specialization in a particular branch/discipline of the field. On the flip side, the 2-years program only covers a general introduction to the course modules. For the students to compete at a global platform, it is vital to choose a 4-year degree over 2-years bachelor’s program in Pakistan.

Here are the major benefits of choosing 4-years BBA degree:

·    Direct eligibility for 18 years of education programs (MS/M.Phil.)

·    Direct eligibility to apply in multinational and national professional organizations

·    Wide range of post-graduation scholarship options across the globe.

·    Sufficient field experience and practical knowledge to execute business opportunities

Scope of BBA (Hons) in Lahore, Pakistan

Lahore is home to some of the greatest educational networks in Pakistan. There is a long list of reputable institutes that offer specialized BBA programs for the students after 12 years of education. Being the urban center, the city is full of opportunities for business students. There are ample options for internships and jobs. Students have complete exposure to compete in a competitive environment.

While there are countless options for the students in Lahore, there are a few institutes that are widely acknowledged for their efforts in promoting quality education in the field of business administration. The country has welcomed numerous business professionals who graduated from such institutes.

For quality education, it is undeniably important that the students analyze the course modules offered in different colleges or universities. Prior knowledge in this regard can help the students decide if they are on the right track. While this may be true, the BBA 2-years program in Lahore is rapidly vanishing subject to the government’s reforms in the higher education sector.

For all the students currently seeking admissions in BBA (Hons), it is highly recommended to check for colleges or universities that are envisioned to offer specialized BBA (Hons) programs in Lahore. These institutes provide better grounds and freedom for the students to gain practical knowledge while they continue to study. Practical experience is of high value when it comes to career options in the local as well as the global scenario. Additionally, students can also apply to foreign business schools based on their field experience.
